CHAPTER FIFTEEN

NO DENYING IT

Rae’s bed tilted slightly toward the door when her dad sat down on it.

“Go away,” she mumbled, all her energy gone.

A warm hand swept across her arm. “Is everything OK?”

Mom? Her voice soothed the raw edges of Rae’s heart. Her voice as sweet as a lullaby always gave her comfort. Was holding one embarrassing moment against her mom worth missing all her love?

Claire had more right to be angry with her mom for never being there in the first place, but she loved her anyway. Maybe she should leave the past in the past and start over with her mom.

Rolling over, she saw the twinkle of love in her mom’s eyes. Not migraine free yet, her mom’s smile fell short. She sat up and wrapped her arms around her, almost knocking her over in the process.

“Mothers always know when something is wrong, even when we are sick. Do you want to tell me about it?” She gently stroked Rae’s head.

Tears poured down her cheeks, and her body hiccupped with sobs. Her mom had a way of pulling emotions from her.

“Are you upset over the game? Your dad said it was pretty rough.”

She shook her head ‘no’.

“Mrs. Shepstone’s death making a new hole in your heart?”

Again, she shook her head ‘no’, but what did she mean by a new hole?

“Then what on Earth is wrong?”

On Earth? Ha! Try both Earth and Ferane!

Her mom twisted around in her arms, looking for a clue to her sadness. She pulled Rae sideways and picked up the memorabilia from the floor. “Now I see.” She pulled Rae closer. “I told Nicolaas you would figure it out some day, but how did you get these things?”

“Claire,” her voice thick and scratchy.

“Oh my,” she sighed. “You need to talk to your dad.”

“No, I just want you.”

“I’ve been waiting a long time for this moment with you, baby, but there’s a lot to discuss.” She released Rae and went to the door. “Nicolaas?”

“Please, Mom, no!” She wrapped her arms around her chest to hold up the sudden heaviness she felt bringing her down.

“Where are you?” Her dad’s voice carried down the hall.

“I’m in Rae’s room. Come here.”

She pulled her knees back up to her chest and began rocking back and forth until her dad walked in.

“Are you crying about the game now?” he asked her, wiping the sleep from his eyes.

“It’s not about the ball game, Nicolaas.” Mom frowned.

“Oh, Hadey’s grandma, Mrs. Shepstone?”

“Think again,” her mom insisted.

“Did Dirk break up with you?” He looked from her to her mom and back again. Then ran his hand through his hair.

Rae couldn’t open her mouth to respond. There just didn’t seem to be the right words. How does one go about accusing their dad of being a liar?

Her mom handed him the memorabilia. For a moment, he still looked sympathetic. Then, in a Ferane moment, his features turned steely, and his face flushed. “When were you in the den? How did you get these out of the
